In 2018, Festival Curta Cinema, the Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival, completes 28 years. For two decades the festival has lived up to its initial purpose of making possible the exhibition of audiovisual short length works which, due to the characteristics of the movie market, reach the general audience with great difficulty.
In these over 27 years, the Festival has shown a selection of the most significant short films in its programs, both domestic and international. It is one of the most important festivals of its kind in Latin America. It is competitive and is the first festival in Brazil to qualify one Brazilian and one foreign short film, regardless of genre, to be nominated for an Oscar ©, a recognition won in 2006.
RioFan – the Rio Fantasy Festival – is an event where genre films are shown and publicized – especially fantasy genre films such as horror, science fiction and fantasy.
It was held for the first time in 2008 and introduced Rio audiences to the best in worldwide production dedicated to this genre, showing an extensive program. In 2011 the festival had a successful second edition, with excellent feedback from Brazilian and international media. Two other editions were held in 2012 and 2013 in the Centro Cultural Justiça Federal - Rio de Janeiro.
