Três no Tri

The new documentary by Eduardo Souza Lima (Zé José) tells the story of the most widely published sports photograph in the world and its author.

Documentary, HD, 15 minutes, Rio de Janeiro, 2013

40 years have gone by.  June, 1970.  World Cup in Mexico. The Brazilian soccer team is tied with Czechoslovakia. Pelé scores the goal that turns the game around. He runs toward the Manchete magazine photographer Orlando Abrunhosa, junping, socking the air. Behind him, Tostão and Jairzinho. Abrunhosa shoots that moment non-stop, hardly having time to adjust the focus.  He thinks, “It’s all out of focus, It won’t be good.” Três no Tri, the new documentary by Eduardo Souza Lima (Zé José) tells the story of the most widely published sports photograph in the world and its author.  A production of Franco Filmes in partnership with Hy Brazil 2001 Films.

Eduardo Souza Lima (Zé José) is a journalist, film critic and filmmaker. He directed his first two short films in VHS – Caçada Implacável and Capitão Eléctron Contra a Ameaça Venusiana in the 1980s while still in college. Both enjoyed a good career in Rio’s video circuit of the time. His first feature film, the documentary Rio de Jano (co-directed by Anna Azeredo and Renata Baldi) was released commercially in 2004 by RioFilme; the second, Travessias, was commissioned by the Roberto Marinho Foundation and shown at the Cine PE festival in 2010.  He also directed the short films O Evangelho Segundo Seu João (2006), which won awards at festivals like the Vitória Cine Video and Guarnicê Maranhão Cinema festivals as well as Pimentipoli (2009), shown at the Luso-Brazilian film Festival in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal.
